stocking-frame A machine for producing material composed of the looped stitch used in knitting; a knitting machine. The invention of a machine for making plain stocking-net to supersede hand-knitting is believed to have been made in 1589 by William Lee M.A., St. John's Coll. Cambridge, a native of Woodborough, near Nottingham.
