denitrify, v.|diːˈnaɪtrɪfaɪ| [de- II. 1.] trans. To deprive of nitrous or hyponitric acid. Hence deˈnitrified ppl. a., deˈnitrifying vbl. n. and ppl. a.; denitrifying bacteria (see quot. 1951); deˈnitrifier, a denitrifying agent; deˌnitrifiˈcator, an apparatus used in sulphuric acid works to remove the nitrous vapours (nitrous or hyponitric acids) from the sulphuric acid previously ‘nitrated’ in the Gay Lussac tower.
