A genus of herbaceous and shrubby perennial plants of the family Compositae, native to tropical and subtropical America; (also stevia) a plant of this genus, esp.the shrub Stevia rebaudiana, whose leaves (or the very sweet-tasting glycosides they contain) may be used as a substitute for sugar or artificial sweeteners.
