—Also (obs) preve, with pap provˈen surviving as the usual past participle in N America (pronounced /proovˈn/) and becoming more common in Britain (pronounced /proovˈn or prōvˈn/), and retained specif in Scots law (pronounced /prōvˈn/) in the verdict not proven, declaring that the charges in a criminal trial have not been proved ORIGIN: OFr prover (Fr prouver) from L probāre, from probus excellent; perh partly from OE prōfian to assume to be, from L probāre.
