-ly, suffix. 
  1. -ly is attached to adjectives to form adverbs:glad + -ly → gladly;gradual + -ly → gradually.
  2. -ly is also attached to nouns that refer to units of time, to form adjectives and adverbs with the meaning "at or for every (such unit of time)'':hour + -ly → hourly (= at every hour);day + -ly → daily (= on or for every day).
  3. -ly is also attached to nouns to form adjectives with the meaning "like (the noun mentioned):''saint + -ly → saintly;coward + -ly → cowardly.
