Etymology: normal (I) + -ize
: to make normal : make conform to or reduce to a norm or standard:
a. : to secure uniformity and destroy coarse structure and strains in (metal) especially by heating to a temperature at which recrystallization takes place or (in steel) by heating above the upper transformation temperature and then cooling in still air — compare heat-treat
b. : to make (a text, dialect, or language) regular as to spelling and inflection by using consistently only one symbol or group of symbols for each phoneme and only one of several variants for each grammatical form
