Etymology: New Latin, from dino- + flagellum + -ata
: an order of chiefly marine usually solitary plantlike flagellates that are typically enclosed in a cellulose envelope which may be simple and smooth or variously sculptured and divided into plates, that have one transverse flagellum running in a groove about the body, one posterior flagellum extending out from a similar median groove, usually a single nucleus, and yellow, brown, or occasionally green chromoplasts, and that constitute a significant element in marine plankton, including certain brilliantly luminescent forms (as noctilucas), important elements of marine food chains (as many peridinians), and most of the flagellates that cause red tide (as members of the genus Gymnodinium) — see dinophyceae
