: a colorless weakly motile cell produced in lymphoid tissue that is the typical cellular element of lymph and constitutes 20 to 30 percent of the leukocytes of normal human blood where it occurs either as the small lymphocyte of about 0.01 millimeter in diameter with large round deeply staining nucleus and narrow rim of clear cytoplasm or as the less common large lymphocyte that is regarded by some as an immature stage of the small one
