As spectacular as the Japanese cedars are, the real champ when it comes to winter purple is Chamaecyparis thyoides ‘Red Star’.

This is followed on proceeding north by subtropical forests containing evergreen oaks, Podocarpus, tree-ferns, and, at higher elevations, Cryptomeria and Chamaecyparis.
