Spanish speakers use many matter-of-fact descriptors for mestizos, or mixed-race people - words commonly considered no more insulting than “blue-eyed” or “dark-haired.”

The overwhelming majority of Costa Rica’s population is either white or mestizo – a combination of European and Amerindian descent.

It classifies people as black, white or mestizo — mixed.
