Although various medals and certificates of merit were distributed by the U.S. military from the Revolution through the Mexican War, medals were originally interpreted as signs of European pomp. It wasn't until the Civil War that first the Navy and then in short order the Army instituted the Medal of Honor for those who distinguished themselves through service. Recipients have included Charles Lindbergh and Chuck Yeager.
