In the Jurassic period many of the existing families, such as the Cicadidae, Fulgoridae, Aphidae, Nepidae, Reduviidae, Hydrometridae, Lygaeidae and Coreidae, had already become differentiated.

In many of the Homoptera, this secretion only amounts to a white powder covering the body, as in some of the Fulgoridae.

The Cicadidae usually sing during the day, whilst the Fulgoridae appear to be night-songsters.
