The Wildlife Conservation Society, the Zoological Society of London and Panthera led the study, and many other conservation groups participated.

Organizations including Panthera, Born Free USA, and National Geographic Society's Big Cat Initiative also support the day and its message of conservation.

Hunter, the Panthera president, said lions are relatively easy to spot in some wildlife parks and leave the impression that their overall population is plentiful.
