The name is better restricted to animals of the typical genus Dasyurus, sometimes called true Dasyures.

This species closely resembles Dasyurus ursinus, but differs in being one-third larger, and in having the canines, or laniaries, of proportionately larger size.

But O'Donoghue believes that milk is secreted in Dasyurus when no pregnancy has occurred.
