Some European countries outside the European Union are also part of the agreement. The name comes from Schengen in Luxembourg, where the agreement was signed. :
The new member states may grant national visas until they join Schengen.
The European Union has not sought to force the United Kingdom or Ireland to join the Schengen Agreement and abolish border controls.
