- Elwyn Brooks White (1899-1985) a US author known for his humorous pieces about American society in The New Yorker magazine. He received a special Pulitzer Prize in 1978. His books included Is Sex Necessary?(1929), written with James Thurber, and the children's book Charlotte's Web (1952). His introduction to the art of writing, The Elements of Style, first published in 1959, is a standard book in US schools.
