X certificate
/ˈeks sətɪfɪkət/
/ˈeks sərtɪfɪkət/
- a label that was given in the past to certain cinema films in Britain by the British Board of Film Censors (now called the British Board of Film Classification). Films were given an X certificate if they were not considered to be suitable for people under 18, usually because they contained violence, sex or bad language. In 1982 the label 'X certificate' was changed to '18’.
