- (1907-95) a Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court for longer than any other in the 20th century (1969-86). He was appointed (= chosen for the job) by President Richard Nixon, but the Supreme Court under him ordered Nixon to give his phone tapes relating to Watergate to the House Judiciary Committee.
