  1. (1844-1930) an English clergyman (= a priest of the Church of England) and teacher at Oxford University. He was well known for his habit of accidentally changing round the first sounds of two or more words when he spoke, so that he might say 'the wrong liver' instead of 'the long river'. This type of phrase, which is often humorous, is called a spoonerism.
