  1. a district in the East End of London. It once had a reputation as one of the poorest areas of central London. A large number of immigrants settled there, including many Jewish people in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today the population is made up of people of various different ethnic origins, the majority of them being of Bangladeshi origin. Whitechapel is also well known as the area where Jack the Ripper committed his murders.
