- Mildred Didrikson (1913-56) an American woman who was famous in many sports, including baseball, basketball, golf and tennis. She has been called ‘the greatest woman athlete in history'. In the 1932 Olympic Games she won the javelin and 80-metre hurdles race with world records (= best performances). In 1938 Didrikson married George Zaharias, a wrestler, and began competing as ‘Babe’ Zaharias. She began playing professional golf in 1947 and won the US Women's Open three times.
