- a novel (1857) by the English author Thomas Hughes (1822-96) about a young boy growing up at Rugby School, where Hughes himself was a pupil. A real headmaster of Rugby, Dr Thomas Arnold, appears as a character in the book and has a great influence on Tom, but many of Tom's experiences are unhappy ones and he is often badly treated by a cruel older boy called Flashman.
