Cyrus Vance

- (1917-2002) the US Secretary of State under President Carter (1977-80). He left the post because he disagreed with Carter's decision to try to rescue the Americans kept as prisoners in Iran during the hostage crisis. In 1992, Vance and the British politician David Owen represented the United Nations and the European Community in trying to bring peace to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
