the News of the World
/ðə ˌnjuːz əv ðə ˈwɜːld/
/ðə ˌnuːz əv ðə ˈwɜːrld/
- a former British tabloid Sunday newspaper, owned by Rupert Murdoch. It was one of Britain's most popular newspapers, and consisted mainly of news about sport, crime and famous people such as film and television actors. It was first published in 1843. In 2011 the paper was closed after some of its journalists were accused of phone hacking (= reading other people's phone messages without permission). In 2012 it was replaced by a Sunday edition of the Sun newspaper, also owned by Rupert Murdoch.
