Northumbria

- an area of northern Britain ruled by kings from the 7th to the 9th centuries AD. It was famous at that time for its monasteries (= Christian religious communities). The name Northumbria is still sometimes used to mean north-east England and south-east Scotland, especially in books, etc. written for tourists.
