- the British government organization which is an agency of the Ministry of Justice and which is responsible for the collections of official government papers and historical documents, the earliest of which date from the 11th century and include the Domesday Book of 1086. The organization was formed in 2003 when the Public Record Office and the Historical Manuscripts Commission were combined. Since 2006 the Office of Public Sector Information and HM Stationery Office have been part of The National Archives.
