- (1899-1982) a New Zealand writer of detective stories who lived in Britain from 1928. Her books include A Man Lay Dead (1934) and Hand in Glove (1962), and her most famous character is Chief Detective Inspector Roderick Alleyn. She was made a dame in 1948.
