Thelonious Monk

- (1917-82) a US jazz musician who played the piano and wrote music. He led a big band in the 1960s and helped to develop modern jazz. His albums include Alone in San Francisco (1959) and Monk's Dream (1962). He was chosen for the Jazz Hall of Fame in 1963.
