- an unknown man for whom William Shakespeare said he had written his Sonnets at the beginning of the first published version of the poems. Shakespeare was in love with a young man when he wrote them and this has led many people to think that Mr W H and the young man were the same person, but nobody knows this for certain. There have been many different theories about the true identity of Mr W H.
