Clement Attlee

- (1883-1967) a British labour politician who became Prime Minister (1945-51), defeating Winston Churchill in the 1945 election. His government introduced the National Health Service, nationalized important industries such as coal, gas, electricity and railways, and gave independence to India, Pakistan, Burma (now Myanmar) and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
