- a British car company started in 1912 near Oxford by William Morris, later Lord Nuffield. The first car it produced was the Morris Oxford, which was very popular. It also produced MG cars. In 1949 the company began production of the Morris Minor, which became one of the most popular cars in Britain for many years. In 1959 it began producing the Mini, with even greater success. In the 1950s the company combined with Austin to form the British Motor Corporation, which later became part of British Leyland.
