- a US city on the coast of California. It is one of the oldest cities in the state and was the Spanish capital of Alta California (1775-1846) until the US Navy captured it. The famous Monterey Jazz Festival has been held there every September since 1958. The Monterey area is popular with artists and attracts many tourists.
