- (1860-1961) the popular name for the US painter Anna Mary Robertson Moses. She was a farmer's wife who did not paint until the age of 76 and then produced more than 1 200 works. Her colourful paintings are in the primitive (= simple) style and show the countryside where she had lived in New York State and Virginia. Her last paintings were done at the age of 101.
