- a short novel by James Hilton (1900-54), published in 1934. It is the story of a lonely teacher at an English public school whose students make fun of him. Later, after he has married a beautiful woman, they respect him. The book was made into two successful British films, in 1939 and in 1969. In 1984 it was made into a TV series and in 2002 a TV film.
