Solomon Islands
/ˈsɒləmən aɪləndz/
/ˈsɑːləmən aɪləndz/
- a country consisting of a group of islands in the south-west Pacific. The islands became a British protectorate (= a country controlled and protected by Britain) in the 1890s, and an independent member of the Commonwealth in 1978. The main island, Guadalcanal, is well known because of the battle that took place there in the Second World War.
