  1. a district in the West End of London, between Oxford Street, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. It is famous for its lively atmosphere and its many cafes, nightclubs, theatres and restaurants. It also has many sex shops, strip clubs (= places where people pay to watch other people take their clothes off) and prostitutes. Many film, television, music and advertising companies have their offices in Soho.

  1. a small fashionable area of Manhattan in New York City. SoHo is short for 'South of Houston', because it is south of West Houston Street which separates it from Greenwich Village. Many artists live in SoHo in old industrial buildings which have been made modern. They have iron fronts and large windows. The buildings were to be destroyed in the 1960s but were saved when the city made SoHo an official historical district.
