the Crown Estate
/ðə ˌkraʊn ɪˈsteɪt/
/ðə ˌkraʊn ɪˈsteɪt/
- all the lands and buildings owned by the British King or Queen and the money that is made from them. In 1760, King George III gave up the rights to these in return for the Civil List, a payment made to the King or Queen every year by Parliament. As a result the money from the Crown Estate is now collected by the government for the British people.
