- a state in the north-western US, also called the Beaver State. The largest city is Portland, and the capital city is Salem. Captain James Cook sailed along its coast in 1778, and Lewis and Clark visited the area in 1805. Oregon became a state in 1859. Its products include salmon and other fish, wood, paper, berries and nuts. Tourists can visit Crater Lake National Park, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
