- born Archibald Percival Wavell (1883-1950) a senior military officer in charge of British forces in the Middle East from 1939 to 1941, during the Second World War. He later commanded British forces in India and from 1943 to 1947 he was Viceroy of India (= the representative of the British government ruling India when it was part of the British Empire). He was made an earl in 1947.
