Barbara Hepworth

- (1903-75) an English sculptor. Her work is mainly abstract (= does not represent people or things in a realistic way) and marked by strong curving lines. She was married for a time to the painter Ben Nicholson and from 1939 lived in St Ives, Cornwall, a town still known for its many artists. She died in a fire at her home, which is now a museum.
