- a novel (1749) by John Cleland (1707-89) about the sexual adventures of a young woman in 18th-century London. Its original title was Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure. The book was banned in Britain when a company tried to publish it in 1963, and became very popular when it was finally published in 1970.
