- the best-known collection of poems by the US poet Walt Whitman. They praise America and the free American man. The collection was first published in 1855 with 12 poems, and then eight more times with poems added each time until there were more than 130. They were not very popular during Whitman's life, but are now considered to have had a great influence on later US poetry.
