the Appalachian Mountains

- a range of mountains in eastern North America. It runs 1 800 miles/2 900 kilometres from Newfoundland in Canada to central Alabama in the US. This includes the region of Appalachia and the Allegheny Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a long-distance path with signs for hikers (= people walking for pleasure).
