- any of a number of hotels around the world established by or named after the Swiss businessman César Ritz (1850-1918). They are famous for being very comfortable and expensive. The first Ritz Hotel was opened in London in 1906. The word ritzy, meaning expensive and elegant, was formed from the name of the Ritz Hotels.
