)- a large US company, established in 1927. It was one of the first to use jet passenger planes and the first to use 747 ' jumbo jets' regularly. One of these crashed in 1988 at Lockerbie, Scotland, after a bomb on board exploded. Because of this and financial problems, Pan Am went out of business in 1991.
