the practices, powers, or duties of a censor, esp repressive censorial control
the act of censoring something
Originally, censorship was the power wielded in ancient Rome by the Censor, official guardian of public morals. Now, it denotes suppression or eradication of words, images, or messages deemed harmful to others, e.g. by corrupting minds (obscenity) or outraging feelings (indecency). Political censorship represses ideas disquietening to rulers: Stalin censored history by eliminating (in person or in photo) those who made it. Only communications with oneself defy censorship: thought is free — Geoffrey Robertson
