Tantra means a handbook or manual and, by extension, the teachings contained therein. In both Hinduism and Buddhism, tantra often refers to practices found outside earlier canons, especially magical techniques that may derive their potency from the violation of social conventions. The equation of tantra with ‘the yoga of sex’, however, misrepresents the diversity of tantric practice and its pervasiveness even in what are considered orthodox traditions — Professor Donald Lopez
