To split an infinitive is to put a word or phrase, usually an adverb, between to and the verb: to boldly go or to more than double. This is not a grammatical error, but the practice is strongly disliked by many people and can be stylistically awkward. It is usually possible and preferable to place the adverb after the verb: to travel hopefully. There are, however, occasions when repositioning the adverb alters the sense. Compare I really want you to try with I want you to really try. In such cases it is better to split an infinitive than to misrepresent your sense or create an awkward sentence
