replace or substitute? These two words are close in meaning but differ somewhat in use. One replaces an old thing with a new thing, or one substitutes a new thing for an old thing. The meaning is essentially the same in both cases, but the prepositions are different (replace … with (or by); substitute … for), as is and the order in which ‘old thing’ and ‘new thing’ follow the verb is also different: replace the House of Lords with an elected second chamber; substitute an elected second chamber for the House of Lords
