ingenious or ingenuous? These two words are easy to confuse. Ingenious means ‘clever’ or ‘effective’, especially in an original or surprising way: an ingenious method of recycling household waste. Ingenuous means ‘innocent’, ‘artless’, or ‘guileless’: too ingenuous to imagine that they might not mean what they said.
